So today let’s talk about white fillings (also known as ‘composite’ fillings). You might be curious what the difference is compared to silver (amalgam) fillings? They are aesthetically more pleasing since they can be closely matched to the colour of your tooth. The composite can be shaped to look like a natural part of your tooth so you can hardly tell that it’s been restored. It also requires less drilling and removal of the original tooth for the filling to bond so it is ideal for small cavities. Composites are best suited for front areas of the teeth where a silver filling would be too obvious. They are also good for repairing chipped teeth, closing gaps between two teeth, cracked or broken teeth, decayed teeth or worn teeth. Like silver fillings they may someday need replacing particularly on rear molars where there’s more wear from chewing.
