Smiling makes you happy

When you smile or laugh your body releases hormones called endorphins which are our body’s own natural ‘happy drug’. And as well as making us feel happy, they also act as pain killers. So next time you stub your toe, try to see the funny side!

It even works if you fake a smile

Fun fact: even faking a smile or a laugh will cause the release of endorphins as it is triggered by the movement of muscles in your face.

Smiling helps you relax

The release of endorphins lowers the level of cortisol in our bodies. Cortisol is the hormone released when we are stressed and anxious so smiling and laughing will help reduce our stress and anxiety. That’s definitely a win-win situation!

Laughing releases emotions

We Brits and our stiff upper lips tend to bottle up our emotions which is not necessarily a good thing and can lead to stress and harm to our general well being. Well what if we were to say that laughter IS the best medicine! Laughing loud and hard can release all those pent up emotions and frustrations. Better out than in, as they say.

Smiling makes you more attractive

It’s true! Although it won’t necessarily turn you into a George Clooney or Jennifer Lawrence, smiling naturally draws people to you because it makes you more approachable, makes you feel more confident and it puts people around you at ease. Perhaps best of all it’s contagious! When you smile people naturally respond by smiling back. We say spread the love you beautiful people!

To have a great smile it helps to have strong healthy teeth. So keep your smile in tip top condition by looking after your teeth and having regular check ups with your dentist or dental health practitioner.
