‘An apple a day keeps the dentist away’
You’ve probably heard the saying, but is it sound advice or just an old wives’ tale?
Well there are two sides to this story – on one hand apples contain sugar which as we all know is bad for our teeth. And apple juice is acidic which is also not good for our tooth enamel.
Not a good start!
Research shows that eating apples can actually help clean your teeth. When you crunch into an apple the fibrous apple flesh and skin scrapes away some of the plaque and food debris. This is great, especially after a meal.
So what’s the verdict? Well on balance eating an apple is a GOOD thing. As well as acting as nature’s toothbrush, apples contain vitamins and minerals that are of great benefit to us.
As long as we brush our teeth regularly and don’t eat them all day long, apples will help keep us healthy!
