Gum is a very popular way of keeping your breath fresh – but can it actually be good for your teeth? In other words, am I just chewing another type of candy?
The act of chewing gum stimulates the production of saliva which helps neutralise tooth harming acids that are produced when food is digested by plaque bacteria on your teeth. The gum also helps dislodge plaque and food debris.
If you go for sugar free gum and chew for 20 minutes after meals, you can have better breath as well as protecting your teeth against tooth decay at the same time. But don’t forget to brush and floss as well. Happy chewing!
For healthy alternatives there are licorice root, fresh parsley, sunflower seeds and nuts.
We also came across this worthy project that deserves a looking in to: a good afterlife for chewing gum that can be made fashionable. Go Anna, we salute you!
