Diet Drinks – the toothkind option?

You don’t need a dentist to tell you that soft drinks are bad for your teeth because of all the sugar they contain, but does that mean that diet drinks are better because they are sugar-free?

We want to say yes, but it’s a NO!

Diet drinks are just as bad for teeth because they are acidic which means that they will erode tooth enamel on contact! The toothkind options are plain water and milk as they are virtually neutral.

However, if there are times when only soft drinks will do, (we’re dentists, not heartless) just limit them to meal times to avoid drinking them over long periods. Use a straw to minimise tooth contact. Last important tip – wash the soft drink down with plain water to help neutralise the acidity.
