We all know that a good dental hygiene is the most important thing to keep your teeth healthy. However eating the right foods can also be a real boost for your teeth.
1) Apples
We’ll start with one we all know (but you might have thought was a myth). Apples are sweet but their fibrous nature helps scrub your teeth clean as you eat them. Carrots and celery also do the same thing and all of them are healthy foods to eat anyway so it’s definitely a win-win!
2) Cheese
Ever wondered why cheese is often offered at the end of a meal? Eating foods containing sugars and carbs will cause the bacteria in your mouth to produce teeth damaging acids. Eating cheese helps neutralise the acids and so reduces acid erosion. Cheese is also high in calcium so it’s a great double whammy for your teeth.
3) Onions
Although they might not help your breath, onions are actually good for your teeth. This is because they contain anti-microbial agents which help combat the acid producing bacteria in your mouth. So this is great news for onion lovers, just make sure you carry sugar free minty gum for social occasions.
4) Kale/Spinach
Apart from when you get bits of these leafy greens stuck in your teeth, these very healthy foods are actually excellent for your oral health.
Both are rich in vitamin C which helps reduce inflammation helping you to fight gum disease.
Both are very tasty and good for you in numerous other ways too.
5) Fish
Bet you didn’t expect this one! Let us explain… We know that calcium is vital for the health of our teeth, however we need vitamin D to absorb calcium.
Therefore eating plenty of oily fish such as salmon or mackerel will increase the body’s ability to take in calcium. Oily fish have numerous other health benefits too so it’s definitely a good way to go.
6) Water
Not strictly a ‘food’ we know but still connected and definitely important. Drinking water during and after eating is very good for your teeth as it helps to wash away food debris and neutralises plaque acid. It’s also useful to drink it after consuming coffee and tea as it will help prevent them staining your teeth.
