Did you know you can start caring for your baby’s gums straight away?
Use a moistened, soft muslin cloth or cotton wool pad to gently clean baby’s gums. When your baby’s first teeth start to pop up, you can begin using a toothbrush. Pick one with a soft, small brush head and a large handle.
Begin by using baby toothpaste, a very small amount (the size of a grain of rice) twice a day. When your child turns three they can graduate onto fluoride toothpaste using pea-sized amounts.
Brush your baby’s teeth for them until they’re old enough to use the toothbrush him or herself. Try to make it fun for them, perhaps turn it into a game. Encourage them to spit the toothpaste out by showing him or her by doing it yourself. It’s fun to copy! Make sure you monitor them brushing their teeth until they can do it properly.
And finally – enjoy teaching your children one of their first life lessons.
