Enamel is the hard, thin outer covering of teeth. Wear caused by biting, chewing and drinking can stain, chip and damage that covering.It’s one of the few things that the human body can not regrow – FACT! Demineralization is the process of losing calcium and other minerals from tooth enamel. Tooth enamel is mostly made of a mineral called calcium phosphate. Acids produced by sugar in our food and acidic drinks dissolve these minerals. Your body counteracts this by producing saliva which contains small amounts of calcium, fluoride and phosphate to replace it.
Modern diet means that often the amount of mineral lost can’t be replaced naturally, due to consuming too much sugary foods, acidic drinks and/or poor oral health care.
Remineralizing toothpaste can help strengthen your teeth but it can’t regrow enamel or reverse cavities. Toothpaste that contains calcium phosphate or stannous fluoride or similar forms of fluoride can help remineralize tooth enamel providing there is enough left to build on. Brushing teeth regularly with a fluoride toothpaste will help strengthen tooth enamel as small amounts of fluoride are absorbed resulting in the enamel becoming stronger and more resistant to decay.
